Apple’s been building its brand on privacy for years, and with iOS 26 it’s taking another swing at protecting your phone time. The star of the update? Call Screening – a new feature designed to keep scam callers at bay before you’ve even lifted your iPhone.
Due for official release in September but already available through Apple’s Public Beta, Call Screening is basically a Siri-powered receptionist that answers your unknown calls for you. When an unfamiliar number pops up, the iPhone silently picks up in the background. A Siri-like assistant then asks the caller to state their name and reason for ringing. Think less “Your call is very important to us” and more “State your business.”

Instead of being put on the spot, you get a real-time transcript on your screen. From there, you can decide whether to answer, hang up, or smugly ignore that “urgent” offer to fix your non-existent car accident claim. The best part? All the clever processing that makes it work happens entirely on your iPhone, not in the cloud. Translation: safer data, fewer scams slipping through.
And yes, Android fans, you’ve seen this before. Google rolled out its own Call Screen tool last year. But Apple’s twist is that it’s bundling Call Screening with other safety-focused features that tap into its obsession with keeping your data private.

Take Stolen Device Protection, also arriving with iOS 26. This adds an extra shield when you’re away from home, work or other trusted locations. If someone pinches your phone, even knowing your passcode won’t be enough – they won’t be able to change it or your Apple ID password without passing a Face ID or Touch ID check.
Considering phone scams have already cost so much each year, Call Screening could become one of those features you didn’t know you needed until it saves you from another 3pm fake “delivery attempt.” By giving iPhones a built-in scam filter, Apple is angling to make privacy feel effortless – like having a bodyguard who only lets the good stuff through.

If you’re the kind of person who already filters texts with laser precision but still gets ambushed by random calls mid-coffee, this could be your new favourite update.
For the impatient, iOS 26 is up for grabs now through the Apple Public Beta programme. Otherwise, hang tight until September when your iPhone officially gets its scam-busting upgrade.
