Bitcoin—the cryptocurrency that spawned a $2 trillion industry—is now traded by the biggest investment firms and even serves as an official currency in El Salvador. But one mystery still haunts the crypto world: who is Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin?
Despite countless theories, the answer remains elusive. HBO’s recent documentary hinted that Canadian Bitcoin expert Peter Todd might be Satoshi, but Todd quickly denied the claim, and the crypto community largely shrugged it off.

Then came Thursday’s buzzworthy announcement: a press conference promising to finally unmask the real Satoshi Nakamoto. Naturally, crypto enthusiasts and reporters were intrigued. Could this finally be it?
Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.
The “Big Reveal” That Went Nowhere
The event, organised by Charles Anderson, already had skeptics rolling their eyes when reporters were asked to pay for their seats. A front-row spot cost £100, with an extra £50 for unlimited questions, and £500 for an exclusive on-stage interview with “Satoshi.”

I declined. So did most of the press.
When the event finally kicked off at London’s prestigious Frontline Club (which, amusingly, clarified it only provided the venue, not an endorsement), the audience of around a dozen reporters quickly grew skeptical. It turned out Anderson and the alleged Satoshi were entangled in legal battles over fraud allegations. Not the best starting point.
Then came the moment of truth—or so we thought. A man named Stephen Mollah quietly walked on stage and announced: “I am here to make a statement that yes: I am Satoshi Nakamoto and I created the Bitcoin on Blockchain technology.”

Cue collective skepticism. For over an hour, Mollah failed to provide any evidence to back his claims. He promised to interact with the first-ever Bitcoins—something only the real Satoshi could do—but didn’t deliver.
Disappointed and bemused, reporters left, convinced this was yet another dead-end in the never-ending Satoshi saga.
Does It Even Matter Who Satoshi Is?
The list of alleged Satoshis is long, from Dorian Nakamoto, a California resident named in a 2014 Newsweek article, to Australian computer scientist Craig Wright, who spent years claiming—and failing—to prove he created Bitcoin. Even Elon Musk denied rumors after a former SpaceX employee floated his name.

Some argue that Satoshi’s anonymity is key to Bitcoin’s ethos. Podcaster Natalie Brunell explains: “By concealing his true identity, Satoshi ensured that Bitcoin wouldn’t have a leader or central figure whose personal agenda could influence the protocol.”
Others, like Sussex University finance professor Carol Alexander, believe the endless speculation is a distraction from more pressing issues, like how crypto could revolutionise the economy.
For now, the hunt for Satoshi Nakamoto continues. Whether they’re a billionaire recluse or simply a myth, one thing is certain: their secret is safe, at least for now.
