New research from AutoTrader, the UK’s largest automotive marketplace, has found that what you drive can determine whether you’re date material-or an instant ick. The study reveals that 5.8 million Gen Z Brits (that’s nearly half the cohort) admit to getting “the ick” after discovering what kind of car their date drives.
Top down, glasses up – proof that love and luxury still run on full horse-power.
Apparently, an untidy interior or the faint smell of yesterday’s takeaway is enough to send a ‘situationship’ skidding off the road.
“A car can say a lot about someone’s personality and lifestyle,” says Erin Baker, Editorial Director at AutoTrader. “Whether it’s how we drive, how tidy we keep our car, or even the model we choose, our motors can be an unexpected reflection of who we are.”

The New Rules of Attraction (and Acceleration)
The numbers speak volumes. 59% of Gen Z say the type of car someone drives is important to their first impression-compared to only 40% of the general population. Nearly three in ten (29%) have ended or reconsidered a relationship because of a partner’s driving habits.
Bad parking and backseat driving are now legitimate reasons for a breakup. Forget red flags-these are red brake lights.
Plug in, power up, glow on.
The top turn-offs, according to AutoTrader’s poll, read like a forensic report from a disappointing Tinder date:
- Unpleasant smell (23%)
- Untidy interiors (22%)
- Tailgating (22%)
- Shouting at other drivers (21%)
- Horn beeping (18%)
Basically, if your car smells, screeches, or looks like a landfill, Gen Z are swiping left before you’ve even started the engine.

The Road to Romance Is Electric
The data also suggests there’s one surefire way to accelerate attraction: drive electric.
According to AutoTrader, 37% of Gen Z say they’d be more attracted to someone who drives an EV-nearly double the national average of 20%. Why? It’s not just the quiet hum or the minimalist dashboards; it’s the signal it sends.
Driving an EV has become shorthand for being conscious, cultured, and forward-thinking-traits that fit perfectly into Gen Z’s love language of values over vanity.

“According to the data, it’s the air of responsibility and environmental awareness that makes owning an electric vehicle even more attractive,” AutoTrader explains. In other words: sustainability is sexy.
And perhaps that’s the real evolution in dating culture. Forget owning a flashy sports car-today’s object of desire is someone who knows where to plug in, not fill up.
Why Gen Z Are the Toughest Critics on the Road
Gen Z’s hyper-awareness of behaviour-both online and IRL-extends seamlessly to the driver’s seat. 65% of them judge a potential partner on their driving habits, compared to 53% of older Brits. A staggering 60% also admit they judge how someone treats their car.
For a generation raised on curation, presentation matters. The car isn’t just transport-it’s a portable personality test. And when everything from your Spotify Wrapped to your Oura sleep score can define your identity, it’s hardly surprising that your car is being judged for vibes, too.

While the EV crowd may be getting more right swipes, AutoTrader’s research also revealed which brands are most likely to win hearts. The top three?

- BMW (16%)
- Porsche (15%)
These cars, it seems, still carry classic allure-symbols of ambition, success, and a little self-care… And with electric luxury models now flooding the market, the lines between prestige and progress are blurring. After all, even Porsche’s hottest new models plug in rather than fill up.
Before Tesla’s touchscreens, Mercedes offered nostalgic automotive elegance.
“While first impressions matter,” Baker reminds us, “it’s worth remembering that the best connections go beyond what’s parked on the driveway.” So if you’re looking for love: drive something that reflects your values-but maybe don’t honk your horn during rush hour.
