New Drone Breakthrough Scan Zebras Like Barcodes

Cutting-edge drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and artificial intelligence are set to revolutionise wildlife conservation by tracking zebras in Kenya and snow leopards in Kazakhstan. This innovative project, led by Marwell Wildlife and the University of Southampton, uses technology so advanced it can capture the intricate vein patterns in an animal’s ear from a staggering height of 120 meters. The tech, developed in Britain, can track and assess the banded beasts without disturbing them.

Nature Meets Tech: Zebras as Living Barcodes

Each zebra is as unique as a fingerprint, thanks to its distinctive black-and-white stripes. These stripes act like natural barcodes, enabling the drones to identify and monitor individual animals within a herd without any physical interference. According to a spokesperson for Marwell Wildlife, “Every zebra has a unique stripe pattern, much like a human fingerprint or barcode, and that can be used to identify an individual.”

The project aims to deploy drones over Kenya’s Grevy’s Zebra Trust reserve to gather vital data on population health, movement patterns, and habitat use. Meanwhile, a parallel initiative in Kazakhstan will use the same technology to monitor snow leopards in Altyn-Emel National Park.

High-Tech Tracking: From Stripes to Shadows

These drones are far from ordinary. Outfitted with thermal imaging and AI, they can differentiate animals by more than just stripes or spots. “Even animals’ shadows can give conservationists information,” said Marwell Wildlife. For instance, the shadows of male scimitar-horned oryx reveal their horn shape, making identification easier.

Zoom capabilities allow researchers to assess an animal’s health by analysing visible features such as ribs and pelvises, indicators of malnutrition or stress. Field trials at Marwell Zoo in Hampshire have demonstrated that the technology provides high-detail images without disturbing the animals.

Global Conservation Potential

The project’s ultimate goal is to create an adaptable drone platform for conservationists worldwide. Professor Philip Riordan, Marwell Wildlife’s director of conservation, highlighted the transformative potential of such technology: “The potential applications of existing technologies for wildlife conservation are already huge and largely untapped. This project will use what is available and drive further innovations to help conservationists around the world.”

By 2024, these drones will take to the skies in Kenya and Kazakhstan, providing invaluable insights into the lives of endangered species. Marwell Wildlife hopes these efforts will set a new standard for non-invasive, cost-effective conservation strategies.
