NatWest Group has taken a bold step to ensure better communication transparency by banning staff from using popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Skype on work devices. The move, which came into effect this month, aims to reinforce the bank’s policy that employees must use only “approved channels” for business-related conversations.

Why the Ban?

Messaging apps like WhatsApp are often praised for their convenience, but they come with a serious downside: disappearing messages and limited retrievability. For banks and businesses under strict regulatory scrutiny, this creates a compliance nightmare. Banks in the US have faced fines totaling over $2.8 billion (£2.18 billion) in recent years for failing to comply with record-keeping regulations.
