The Black Beauty AI Challenge Is The Tech Competition You Need To Know About

AI is learning fast – but is it learning everyone? That’s the powerful question behind the Black Beauty AI Challenge, a bold new initiative launched by Black Girls Code and textured haircare favourite The Doux. And spoiler alert: it’s not just about tech. It’s about ownership, representation, and rewriting the digital future through a distinctly Black lens.

The challenge invites girls and young women across the U.S., aged 13 to 25, to create a 60–90 second AI-generated video that celebrates their personal definition of beauty. Think culture, confidence, hair, style, and all the nuances that make Black beauty so powerful – and too often overlooked by tech.

“The challenge is about taking control of that narrative and running the code ourselves,” says Maya Smith, CEO of The Doux. “If Black creators don’t guide what AI learns from us, we risk being overlooked – or worse, misrepresented.” (Quote via The Doux.)

Using free tools like Kaiber.ai, Runway ML, Pika, Canva, and CapCut, participants will design short videos that flip the script on how beauty is defined in the digital age. Alongside cash prizes ranging from $500 to $1,500 and gift cards from The Doux, the real prize is visibility – national exposure, a TikTok and Instagram spotlight, and a premiere at a pop-up gallery in New York City on MLK Day 2026.
