WhatsApp Ads Are Coming… But Not (Yet) to Your Chats

It’s happened. The last vaguely sacred corner of the internet is being monetised. WhatsApp, the app that proudly declared “no ads, no games, no gimmicks,” is now welcoming ads. Meta, its parent company, says they’re starting with the Updates tab – home to Statuses and Channels.

So yes, your group chats are safe (for now). You won’t be scrolling through memes and suddenly hit a sponsored message about crypto or vitamin gummies. But let’s not pretend this doesn’t mark a shift. Because we’ve seen how this movie ends.

“Today it’s the Updates tab. Tomorrow it maybe suggested businesses in chat search, or even full-screen ads between voice calls,” warns the original article. And if you remember Facebook in 2009 versus Facebook now, you know how quickly “just a few ads” turns into an all-you-can-see buffet of promos.

WhatsApp claims they won’t mine your private messages to tailor ads – no AI sifting through your chat about borrowing a tenner for hot wings. Instead, they’ll rely on basic data: your city, language, which channels you follow, what you click on in the app, and your Meta account info (if you’ve linked it). Sounds harmless. Until you realise that’s still more than enough for algorithmic stalking.

And sure, it’s only the Updates tab – for now. But 1.5 billion users check that tab every day, according to Meta. So even if you personally just tap on it accidentally while looking for your aunt’s birthday message, you’re part of the numbers. And the numbers are the business model.

For businesses, though, this is Christmas come early. They’ll be able to advertise directly in WhatsApp, promote their channels, and even offer paid subscriptions for exclusive content. Think: sneak peeks, VIP deals, or maybe a livestream of your local corner shop’s 4-for-1 egg sale. It’s a golden opportunity to meet customers where they already are – glued to their chats.

So what does this mean for you? Not much yet. You’ll just start seeing ads between your mate’s meme Status and your cousin’s inspirational quote. But it’s a slippery slope. WhatsApp’s quiet, ad-free charm is officially on borrowed time.

And no, your network provider won’t be giving you free data for these ads. You’ll pay to see them with your own bundle. So, Zuckerberg gets to show you ads – using your internet. Genius, really.
