5 Things you need to know about Google’s Supercomputer

Google’s latest quantum computing chip, Willow, just pulled off something mind-blowing. It solved a problem so complex that even the world’s most powerful supercomputers would take 10 septillion years to crack.

For context, that’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years – far longer than the universe has existed. Here are five key things you need to know about this quantum leap.

1. Willow’s Speed Is Out of This World

Google claims Willow solved a problem in under five minutes that would take traditional supercomputers an eternity to complete. Hartmut Neven, the head of Google Quantum AI, Willow’s performance as “astonishing” in an official statement, calling it the “best quantum processor built to date.” While this doesn’t mean quantum computers can replace regular ones yet, it’s a massive step forward.

2. Quantum Computing Is ‘Spooky’ Science

Unlike the laptop you’re reading this on, quantum computers use qubits instead of regular bits (1s and 0s). Qubits can represent both a 1 and a 0 at the same time, making quantum computers insanely powerful for certain tasks. Plus, they harness “spooky” quantum effects like entanglement, where particles can influence each other instantly, no matter the distance.

This allows quantum computers to calculate multiple outcomes simultaneously, exponentially boosting their speed.

3. Did Google Just Prove Parallel Universes Exist?

Here’s where it gets a little sci-fi. Hartmut Neven suggested Willow’s performance “lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes.” This refers to physicist David Deutsch’s theory that successful quantum computing could back the “many worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Not everyone’s on board, though. Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel called out Google on Medium for “conflating unrelated concepts.” According to Siegel, quantum mechanics can work just fine without introducing parallel universes. Either way, the debate makes this breakthrough even cooler.

4. It’s a Game-Changer for Real-World Problems

While Willow is still experimental, Google believes quantum computers could one day help tackle massive real-world challenges that are impossible for regular machines. Think designing better electric car batteries, developing new medicines, or advancing nuclear fusion to create clean energy.

“Many of these future game-changing applications won’t be feasible on classical computers; they’re waiting to be unlocked with quantum computing,” Neven explained.

5. Willow Cracked a 30-Year Quantum Challenge

One of quantum computing’s biggest obstacles has been error rates. As more qubits are added, quantum chips become more prone to errors, holding back progress. But Willow marks a breakthrough: Google engineered the chip to reduce errors as more qubits were added – a problem scientists have been chasing for nearly 30 years.

In an interview with MailOnline Professor Winfried Hensinger called it a “very important milestone.” Meanwhile Surrey University’s Alan Woodward told the BBC it’s a major step, even if “one has to be careful not to compare apples and oranges.”

The Bottom Line

Google’s Willow chip is a monumental leap for quantum computing, pushing the boundaries of speed, scale, and what’s possible. While we’re still years away from practical, commercial quantum machines, breakthroughs like this are laying the groundwork for a tech revolution.

Whether or not we’re living in a multiverse, one thing’s certain: the future of computing just got a lot weirder—and way more exciting.
