Russia Fines Google Over YouTube Drama

Google is facing a mind-bending fine from Russia, reportedly topping an astronomical “two undecillion” rubles—yes, that’s two followed by 36 zeros. The fine, which surpasses the combined GDP of every country on the planet, came after Google’s refusal to restore YouTube accounts for Russian state-run and pro-government channels.

The absurdly high figure has been building up as Google continues to stand by its decision to keep the accounts blocked. The stakes get even higher if Google doesn’t pay up in nine months, at which point the fine will start to double daily, according to Russian state news agency Tass. Russia’s RBC News reports that the hefty penalty comes after Google removed 17 Russian TV channels from YouTube, a move that Russia views as unacceptable and that it’s fighting to reverse in court.

Google’s current market value sits at about $2.16 trillion, making the fine impossible to pay and unlikely to be resolved by a cash payout. As one Russian judge reportedly noted, this is “a case in which there are many, many zeros,” underscoring the symbolic and political nature of the ongoing dispute.

This isn’t the first time Google and Russia have clashed. The tech giant originally pulled Tsargrad TV and RIA FAN from YouTube in 2020, citing compliance with U.S. sanctions. Then, as tensions rose following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Google further blocked Kremlin-affiliated outlets like Sputnik and RT. Since then, the Russian authorities have escalated the case, demanding that Google restore the blocked accounts and comply with local media policies—or else remain locked out of the Russian market.

For Google to re-enter the market, compliance with Russia’s court decision is reportedly a requirement. For now, the company seems set on maintaining its stance, facing a fine that no company—or country—could feasibly pay.
