Beauty’s Biggest Ingredient Has Nearly Run Out

Saffron, one of the world’s most coveted ingredients, is facing growing challenges due to climate change and geopolitical instability. Priced at around $1,600 per kilogram, this precious spice isn’t just a culinary treasure—it’s also a cornerstone of high-end beauty products. However, its future looks increasingly uncertain.

Michelle Ranavat, founder of the luxury skincare brand Ranavat, recently visited Kashmir’s saffron fields to meet the farmers behind this labor-intensive crop. Saffron is harvested from the crocus sativus flower, whose delicate threads must be handpicked at dawn to prevent damage. Ranavat’s products use one gram of saffron per bottle, emphasizing the rarity and precision involved. “It all starts there, and everything is hand-picked,” she says.

The global saffron market is highly concentrated, with Iran producing 90% of the world’s supply. Yet, prolonged drought and water scarcity between 2022 and 2023 saw Iranian yields plummet from 400,000 kilograms to just 80,000 kilograms, according to Bhimu Patil of Texas A&M University. These disruptions have sent global prices soaring, just as demand from the beauty and wellness industries continues to grow. Brands like YSL Beauty, Sisley Paris, and indie labels such as Ranavat rely on saffron’s potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in products like serums and creams.

Ranavat absorbed $20,000 in rising costs this year to shield consumers, but not all brands can follow suit. Anne Oliver, founder of House of M Beauty, sources saffron from Afghanistan, ensuring rigorous testing for purity. Her suppliers have raised prices three times over seven years, doubling costs due to increased demand. “They are more popular now,” Oliver notes. This trend echoes across the industry, with Greek brand Korres seeing a 30% saffron price hike after the war in Ukraine drove up energy and fertilizer costs.

Saffron’s scarcity stems from its unique biology. The drought-tolerant crocus bulb is highly sensitive to temperature changes, making it vulnerable to climate extremes. This labor-intensive crop requires 17,000 flowers to produce just one kilogram of saffron, and only 31% of global production meets premium quality standards.

Some are turning to innovative solutions. Israeli company Saffron Tech is using vertical farming to grow saffron year-round in controlled environments, reducing dependency on unpredictable weather. “This opens new markets in nutraceuticals and beauty products,” says CEO Tal Wilk-Glazer, emphasizing the potential of saffron extraction to amplify its health benefits.

As the global premium saffron market is projected to grow to $341 million by 2030, brands are also deepening relationships with small-scale farmers to secure supply chains. Still, as consumer interest surges, Wilk-Glazer warns, “Supply has often fallen short of global demand. As more people recognise saffron’s quality and benefits, the gap is likely to increase.”

This rare ingredient’s journey highlights the complex interplay between nature, science, and luxury—a delicate balance that could shape the future of beauty and wellness industries.
