How Does the Smart Lipstick Work?

At first glance, the Smart Lipstick looks more like a futuristic eye exam machine than a beauty gadget. Users simply rest their chin on an ergonomic platform while an AI-powered camera maps their lips to determine their precise shape and natural tones.

Then comes the magic—a robotic arm applies lipstick with millimetre-level accuracy, ensuring even coverage without the need for a steady hand. Once applied, a verification photo is taken to confirm a flawless finish.

For Milene Haraguchi Padilha, an R&D expert at Grupo Boticário, the Smart Lipstick is about more than just makeup—it’s about empowerment. “Our large R&D team of 42 professionals—including engineers, product designers, UX experts, and diversity specialists—worked tirelessly for seven years to create technology that not only applies makeup flawlessly but empowers people with disabilities to experience the joy and confidence that comes with applying and wearing lipstick independently,” she says.
