What if your brain could see what your eyes can’t? Elon Musk reckons it’s possible – and Neuralink might be the one to do it.
In a recent fireside chat with Y Combinator, Musk dropped his latest mind-bending update: Neuralink is gearing up to trial vision-restoring brain implants. Yes, implants. For vision. “In the next six to twelve months, we’ll be doing our first implants for vision, where even if somebody is completely blind, we can write directly to the visual cortex,” Musk said, casually changing the game once again.

If that sounds like science fiction, remember this is the same company that once trained a monkey to play Pong using only its thoughts. Since that headline-grabbing moment in 2021, Neuralink has been on a mission to translate brain signals into digital actions, securing FDA approval for human trials and shifting its focus to more ambitious goals – like restoring movement in paralysed patients, or now, giving blind individuals a version of sight.
According to Musk, one of their monkeys has already had a visual implant for three years. The chip doesn’t fix the eyes themselves, but instead sends signals straight to the brain’s vision-processing centre. Early versions may only produce low-res images (think pixelated VHS vibes), but Musk claims it could eventually handle “multi-spectral wavelengths” including ultraviolet and infrared. So not just sight – super sight.

While Musk’s neural endeavours are grabbing headlines, the entire brain-computer interface (BCI) field is heating up. Apple recently announced it’s working with BCI companies Synchron and Nvidia to let users control devices with their thoughts. Paradromics just completed its first human implant and has teamed up with Saudi Arabia’s Neom fund. Precision Neuroscience is also making FDA-approved waves.

Still, Neuralink has one major advantage: the Musk Multiverse. With Tesla’s Optimus robot in the works, Neuralink could one day let users control humanoid bots just by thinking. Pair that with xAI’s latest machine learning breakthroughs and it’s not hard to imagine a future where thoughts alone drive cars, write code, or – let’s be honest – scroll TikTok.

Of course, this tech isn’t without its risks. Implanting anything into the brain is high-stakes work. As Musk himself admits, these procedures are “incredibly intricate” and must prioritise patient safety. But if Neuralink pulls it off, it could be one of the most profound medical breakthroughs of our generation.
