The Download: Social Media Coach Phoebe Parke On Building A Personal Brand And The Tech That Powers Her Day

If you’ve ever wondered how to turn scrolling into a salary, Phoebe Parke is the woman you want in your corner.

“I started off working as a journalist because I love storytelling (and I’m really nosy!),” she tells The Modems. That curiosity has carried her from breaking newsrooms to boardrooms, and now into the world of personal brand coaching.

At CNN International, Phoebe landed her first big break through Creative Access, and quickly carved out a niche no one else wanted at the time. “I got into social media there because it was the thing no one else wanted to do, and I knew it was going to be big.” She was right – within a few years she was leading CNN Africa’s social strategy, proving her instincts were ahead of the curve.

By the time she took the reins at Grazia, Phoebe had fully fallen for the world of digital. “I fell in love with social media marketing and went on to lead social at Grazia Magazine,” she says, a role where she transformed the brand’s online presence, launched award-winning campaigns, and picked up a BSME award along the way.

My 3 favourite gadgets are…

My iPhone
MacBook Air
My headphones are glued to me at all times! Being a freelance social media coach means I’m pretty much always working from somewhere different and unique each day and I need simple, user-friendly systems to work with.

My favourite software & apps are …

My favourite software and apps are Canva, Trello, Notion, Substack and Gmail – along with the Bible App for encouragement. And the timer in the iPhone Clock App is so underrated!

A tech tip that has significantly improved my workflow is…

I have to set a timer every time I go on TikTok otherwise I lose at least three hours to mindless scrolling! In fact, the timer on my iPhone is used constantly (through Siri).

I need to get into a flow state to create social content on Canva, write LinkedIn posts and draft my weekly newsletter on Substack – so I’ll set the timer and put my phone on do not disturb. That way I don’t have to keep checking the time, and I can write freely until it’s time to get ready for a client call or appointment.
