Meet Tilly Norwood: The AI Actress Hollywood Is Furious About

Hollywood has a new “It girl” – except she doesn’t eat, sleep, breathe, or exist outside of a hard drive. Meet Tilly Norwood, a perfectly coiffed brunette with an Instagram feed as curated as any influencer worth her iced-coffee. The only catch? She’s not real.

Tilly is the brainchild of London-based AI video production studio Particle6, which introduced her to the world at the Zurich Film Festival as part of its new “AI talent studio” venture Xicocia.

Overnight, this digital ingenue went from niche experiment to lightning rod for one of the biggest debates in the creative industries: can a computer-generated character ever be an actor – and what does that mean for the humans who already struggle to find work?

While her creators frame her as an artistic exploration, the rest of Hollywood is spiralling. Unions are issuing statements, Oscar-winners are panicking on podcasts, and Instagram is a battlefield of furious comments. Whether you think she’s a clever art project or the end of artistry as we know it, one thing is certain: Tilly Norwood has become the most talked-about starlet of 2025, despite never having drawn a real breath.

Particle6 and the Birth of Xicocia

Founded in 2015 by actress-turned-tech entrepreneur Eline Van der Velden, Particle6 has always been about pushing creative boundaries. Van der Velden herself comes from the world of performance, with credits in the Dutch series De Troon, comedy show Soft Border Patrol, and even a small role opposite Jamie Dornan in Flying Home. She also happens to have a background in physics and mathematics – not your average Hollywood résumé.

Particle6 has already collaborated with BBC, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and gaming giant Genshin Impact. But with the launch of its new arm, Xicocia, Van der Velden is moving from simply using AI in production to attempting something bigger – creating an actual stable of AI characters.

Tilly Norwood is the first out of the gate. Think of her as the industry’s inaugural “AI actress,” designed with girl-next-door appeal and enough relatability to seem like someone you might grab an oat latte with in Shoreditch.

Who (or What) Is Tilly Norwood?

On paper, Tilly Norwood ticks all the boxes of a rising Hollywood talent. She’s photogenic, brunette, and her features look uncannily like a mash-up of half the young actresses currently gracing red carpets: part Olivia Cooke, part Lily James, with a hint of Ana de Armas.

But Tilly isn’t simply a pretty face. She’s pitched as an actress – a performer who could, in theory, star in movies, advertise products, and build a fan base. She even has her own Instagram account filled with coffee-cup snaps and mood-board vibes.

For Van der Velden, this isn’t about replacing humans. In a statement on Tilly’s Instagram, she wrote:

“To those who have expressed anger over the creation of our AI character, Tilly Norwood: she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art. Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity.”

She compared AI to a “new paintbrush,” adding:

“I’m an actor myself, and nothing – certainly not an AI character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance.”

Her point is clear: she sees Tilly as a creative experiment, not an existential threat.

Hollywood Reacts: “Please Stop”

The response from Hollywood has been swift, sharp, and deeply emotional. Within days of the announcement, Oscar-nominee Emily Blunt voiced her alarm on a Variety podcast. Shown a photo of Tilly, she blurted:

“Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary. Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.”

SAG-AFTRA, the U.S. actors’ union, issued its own scathing statement:

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers – without permission or compensation. It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience.”

Even the agents – often blamed for industry disruption – drew the line. At TheWrap’s 2025 Grill Conference, WME co-chair Richard Weitz was unequivocal: “We are in the human business. We’re not interested in taking the best of our actors and being put in an AI model. So nope, we’re not going to represent her.”

The Instagram Bloodbath

If Hollywood insiders were blunt, Instagram was brutal. Tilly’s own page quickly filled with angry comments from actors and fans alike.

Actress @jj_kessie fumed:

“Hey this is disgusting. I am a ‘girl Nextdoor’ type actress as this ‘Tilly’ is described. This AI model will literally take roles and jobs from people like me… How about instead of trying to replace us, you… I don’t know… cast us???? I am utterly disgusted and appalled at this. It’s an attack on art and artists such as myself.”

Another user, @ari.annawhite, declared:

“this is so incredibly insulting to us real artists.”

@preetiidhanda raised ethical concerns about AI beauty standards:

“There are more beautiful human beings in real life than this artificial Created persona of a woman… saying that this is what beauty should look like is really manipulation and not ethical and gives children and people the wrong idea.”

She doubled down later:

“You are not an actor. You can pretend to emote and mimic the human experience but there are more beautiful humans than your interpretation on what the human experience is.”

Others were even harsher. One commenter wrote: “Worst thing I’ve ever seen. I’ll take a REAL actor instead.” Another raged: “I’ve never wanted something to fail this much before. I will NEVER watch a movie or a TV show that uses this junk.”

And it wasn’t only about art. @aaronwritesstuff slammed the environmental cost:

“The amount of harm to the environment AI does should make you stop doing this immediately. Fresh water and electricity, every time you generate. Shame on you for flushing away our future for this distraction.”

If Van der Velden hoped Tilly would spark conversation, she was right – but it was not the flattering kind.

A Divided Industry

So where does this leave us? On one hand, Tilly Norwood is undeniably an artistic experiment – a digital puppet designed to test the boundaries of performance. Van der Velden insists that AI characters should be treated as a genre in their own right:

“I also believe AI characters should be judged as part of their own genre, on their own merits, rather than compared directly with human actors. Each form of art has its place, and each can be valued for what it uniquely brings.”

On the other hand, the anger from actors is rooted in economics as much as artistry. Acting is already precarious – a career path where rejection is the default and side hustles are mandatory. For many, Tilly doesn’t just represent a thought experiment – she represents fewer auditions, fewer paychecks, and fewer chances to practice their craft.

And then there’s the audience. While studios might be enticed by the efficiency of AI, history has shown that viewers crave authenticity. From the uncanny valley of The Polar Express to deep-faked Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian, audiences often recoil when digital facsimiles try to pass as real.

What Happens Next?

Despite the uproar, it’s unlikely that Tilly Norwood will vanish. Particle6 has positioned her as the face of its AI talent division, and Van der Velden is adamant about continuing the experiment. The question is whether audiences will embrace her or reject her outright.

Either way, Tilly has already done something remarkable: she’s forced Hollywood, and the wider creative world, to confront uncomfortable questions. What makes art human? Can technology expand creativity without hollowing it out? And perhaps most provocatively: who gets to decide what counts as “real” performance in an age of synthetic personalities?

For now, Tilly Norwood remains a paradox – the most talked-about actress in Hollywood who isn’t an actress at all.
