Meta’s Vibes App Is TikTok for AI-Generated Videos

If your Instagram feed already feels like a chaotic mix of cat videos, dance challenges and dad jokes, prepare for a fresh wave of content – this time brought to you by artificial intelligence.

Meta has just announced the launch of Vibes, a new feed inside the Meta AI app that will be populated entirely by AI-generated short-form videos. (Think TikTok, but with algorithms – not humans – doing the creative output.)

According to Meta, Vibes is “a feed of expressive AI-generated videos from artists and creators.” The idea is simple: users can either make content from scratch, upload something they’ve already shot, or “remix” a video they spot in the feed by adding music, tweaking visuals, or flipping the style to their own taste. As the company explains, “With Vibes, you can start from scratch, work with content you already have, or remix a video from the feed to make it your own. Add new visuals, layer in music, and adjust styles to match your taste.”

Once you’ve crafted your AI-assisted masterpiece, you can post directly to the Vibes feed, DM it to friends, or cross-share to Instagram and Facebook Stories or Reels. Meta is also promising that more powerful video models will be added in collaboration with visual artists and creators over the coming months.

The rise of “AI slop”

Not everyone is thrilled. Under Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement video on Instagram – a surreal clip of a dad trying to calculate the tip on a $30 lunch (“Oh gosh … I think it’s probably to going to be, I dunno, at least $600bn”) – one user quipped: “Bros posting ai slop on his own app.”

That term, “AI slop,” has become shorthand for the wave of mass-produced, often bizarre AI content flooding the internet. The Guardian recently revealed that almost one in ten of the fastest-growing YouTube channels are already running entirely on AI-generated videos.

Still, slop or not, the scale of AI content creation is only accelerating. Google’s Veo3 model, released in May, gave filmmakers tools to create cinematic material using nothing but text prompts. Midjourney and Black Forest – whose video-generating models Meta is plugging into Vibes, according to its new chief AI officer Alexandr Wang – are pushing the boundaries of what AI can render in motion.

Zuckerberg showcased Vibes with clips of an Egyptian princess taking a selfie, a kitten in full baker attire kneading dough, and a Honey Monster-style creature wobbling through a bike ride. It is surreal, occasionally charming, and entirely engineered by AI.

From interstellar football matches to cucumber-eyed cats at the pool, Meta’s new Vibes feed proves AI video isn’t just futuristic – it’s fabulously bizarre.

For Meta, Vibes is less about artisanal artistry and more about engagement. By giving everyday users easy remix tools and a fresh feed to scroll, Meta is betting that AI-assisted content will keep younger audiences hooked inside its ecosystem – even if some critics are already calling it “slop.”
