The Biggest Dating App Photo Turn-Offs And Icks – According to 1,200 Singles

Opening a dating app can feel less like romance and more like admin. You’re essentially project-managing your own love life: scroll, scan, swipe. In fact, a new survey from dating app Wisp confirms what many of us already suspected—your photos matter more than your words.

According to their poll of 1,200 singles, 83% of people judge a profile based on photos before even glancing at the bio. Translation? Your hot take on oat milk vs. almond milk is gathering digital dust while your badly lit bathroom mirror selfie is scaring off matches.

So, what exactly is making people swipe left faster than you can type “hey”? Wisp asked participants to fess up to their biggest photo turn-offs – and the results are… telling.

Men’s Biggest Dating Photo Icks:

Let’s start with the boys. Sorry lads, but that gym selfie you thought showed discipline and dedication? Women are not buying it. Nearly two-thirds of women said they find them “cringe” and “try-hard.” The same goes for the moody close-up selfie – what you think is brooding comes across as awkward at best.

Bathroom selfies were another universal ick, swiftly joined by the sunglasses-indoors look (which hides your entire face and suggests you’re hiding something else, too). Blurry photos that look like they were shot on a BlackBerry circa 2008 also didn’t make the cut.

And while it might feel efficient to upload a group photo, women admitted it’s a dealbreaker if they can’t work out which one you are. Add in shirtless photos, messy rooms, or a conveniently “cropped-out ex” still lurking in frame, and your profile starts reading less “mystery man” and more “walking red flag.”

Women’s Biggest Dating Photo Icks:

Before we get too smug, ladies – we’re guilty too. The gym selfie is a double offender here, with 59% of men saying it’s an instant turn-off. The other big complaint? Over-filtered selfies. What might look dreamy on Instagram Stories can come across as “fake” on a dating profile, where people want to see the real you.

Yoga poses were also unpopular (apparently they scream “performative”), while horse-riding shots gave some men the impression of being “posh and unrelatable.” Close-ups felt too staged, and messy room backdrops gave off “low effort” vibes.

Like women, men also hated the group photo guessing game: if they had to spend too long figuring out which one was you, they admitted they simply moved on. Bathroom selfies and giant sunglasses also made the “please don’t” list.

What this actually means for your profile…

So, should you throw out your bio entirely? Not quite. But according to Wisp, your photos are your shop window. No matter how funny or self-aware your profile text is, a blurry pic or an over-edited selfie will sabotage your efforts.

The winning formula? Authenticity, good lighting, and effort. That doesn’t mean a professional shoot (though no one’s stopping you). It means pictures where your personality actually comes through. A candid laugh at brunch, your favourite city backdrop, a hobby that isn’t just lifting weights – these are the photos that make people stop and swipe.

Or, as a Wisp spokeswoman neatly put it, “Your photos are your shop window… First impressions matter – especially in dating.”

The takeaway? Skip the mirror flexes, tidy your room, and resist the temptation to hide behind sunglasses or FaceApp filters. Your next match might just thank you for it.

The Modems’ quick-fire rules for great dating app photos:

  1. Think daylight, not downlight – natural light does wonders.

  2. Be the main character – no more group shots where you’re the third person on the right.

  3. Skip the clichés – gym, bathroom, car bonnet? Leave them behind.

  4. Effort > filters – clean room, good angles, real smile.

  5. Keep it honest – you’re building trust, not selling snake oil.
