Are You Addicted to Your Phone? 5 Key Signs to Watch Out For

In today’s digital world, many of us feel tethered to our phones, but experts warn that this constant connection may be more than just a habit. In fact, the growing phenomenon of smartphone addiction is now compared to drug dependence, with some studies finding that it can trigger similar psychological and physical symptoms. “Smartphone addiction is a psychological condition in which a user develops symptoms traditionally associated with substance dependence,” explained Dr. Daria Kuss, an expert in addictive behavior, to William Hunter from the Mail Online.

This week, the UK Parliament is set to debate the ‘Safer Phones Bill,’ which aims to make online content less addictive for young people. As legislation seeks to address this rising issue, here are five key signs that may indicate smartphone addiction.

1. Increasing Time on Your Phone

Smartphone addiction often begins with extended screen time, where users gradually spend more hours scrolling or checking notifications. “What you’d expect is a gradual increase in the time you spend engaging in the activity,” explains Professor Mark Griffiths, an internet addiction expert. Studies show that more than four hours of daily screen time is linked to higher addiction rates. Similar to other addictions, people develop a “tolerance” and need more screen time to get the same satisfaction.

2. Negative Impact on Life

One major indicator of addiction is how it affects other parts of your life. If you find yourself neglecting responsibilities, relationships, or sleep because of your phone, this could be a warning sign. “It’s not about the amount of hours; it’s about the amount of hours which negatively impacts other things you should be doing,” says Griffiths. The compulsive need to stay online can disrupt productivity and social interactions, leading to real-world consequences.

3. Using Your Phone to Alter Your Mood

Many people turn to their phones to escape boredom or stress, a behavior often seen in addiction. Griffiths explains, “You use your phone as a way of modifying your mood…to get buzzed-up, high, aroused, and excited or to…de-stress, to relax.” Social media platforms are designed to keep users hooked, providing dopamine hits similar to addictive substances. If you find yourself reaching for your phone to change your mood, it may be a sign of dependency.

4. Mental Health Impacts

Smartphone addiction has been linked to anxiety, depression, and stress. A study by King’s College London found that teens with problematic smartphone use (PSU) were significantly more likely to experience these mental health issues. As with other addictions, withdrawal from the device can lead to irritability and mood swings, making it difficult to function without constant online engagement.

5. Physical Symptoms

Addiction doesn’t just impact mental health—it can also affect the body. Users report symptoms like nausea, hand tremors, and even stomach cramps when they go without their phones for too long. Research shows that smartphone addiction can also disrupt sleep, leading to insomnia and other health risks, such as high blood pressure, depression, and obesity.

While smartphone addiction is not yet an official medical diagnosis, experts like Griffiths caution that it shares many traits with substance addictions. “There’s a difference between problematic smartphone use and addictive smartphone use,” he explains, noting that true addiction involves compulsive behavior and deep dependency. If any of these signs resonate, it may be time to assess your relationship with your phone and set healthier boundaries.
