It sounds like a plot twist in a bizarre Netflix drama, but for one French woman, the nightmare was all too real.

Anne, a 53-year-old interior decorator, fell victim to a scam involving advanced AI technology, fake social media profiles, and edited images, all convincing her she was in a romantic relationship with… Brad Pitt.

Anne’s story began innocently enough when she was first contacted on Instagram by someone claiming to be Pitt’s mother. “She told me that her son needed someone like me,” Anne explained in an interview on the French news program Seven to Eight on the TF1 channel. Shortly after, the scammers—posing as the Hollywood icon himself—started ‘messaging’ her, weaving a web of deception that would last over a year.

“At first, I said to myself that it was fake, that it’s ridiculous,” Anne shared. But unfamiliar with social media and the tactics scammers use, she soon found herself swept up in their elaborate lies. Using AI-generated selfies and messages, the fraudsters convinced Anne that Pitt needed money for kidney treatment, with his accounts supposedly frozen due to divorce proceedings with Angelina Jolie.

Anne went so far as to divorce her husband, believing she was building a future with the Hollywood star. She sent a staggering 830,000 euros to the scammers before realising the truth—when news of Pitt’s real-life relationship with Ines de Ramon surfaced in the tabloids.

“I ask myself why they chose me to do such harm like this,” she said, adding, “I’ve never harmed anyone. These people deserve hell.”
