BYD: Everything You Need To Know About China’s Answer To TESLA

Tesla has long reigned supreme in the world of electric vehicles. But in a twist Elon Musk probably didn’t see coming, Chinese automaker BYD (short for Build Your Dreams, though founder Wang Chuanfu says it means… nothing) has officially overtaken Tesla in EV sales. Yep — the student has become the master.

In the last quarter of 2024, BYD pulled ahead of Tesla in global electric vehicle sales, delivering 1.76 million fully electric cars compared to Tesla’s 1.79 million — and that’s before you even count BYD’s hybrids. Add those in, and BYD hits a jaw-dropping 4.3 million global vehicle sales.

So how did this low-profile Shenzhen-based battery maker become the world’s EV heavyweight? Tech, timing, and turbo-charged pricing.

Founded in 1995, BYD started out making cellphone batteries before making a surprisingly bold pivot to cars in 2003. That move raised eyebrows (and tanked its stock by 21%), but Wang stayed the course. Fast forward five years, and Warren Buffett was all in — investing $230 million for a 10% stake in the fledgling automaker. Cue the glow-up.

Today, BYD doesn’t just make affordable EVs (its Seagull hatchback starts at $10K — compare that to Tesla’s $32K+ Model 3), it also builds its own “Blade Batteries,” a lithium iron phosphate powerhouse known for being longer-lasting and less prone to catching fire. And while Elon Musk may have denied BYD was supplying batteries to Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory, German media reports suggest otherwise.

The company’s rapid rise is fuelled by tech: from its five-minute ultra-fast charging innovation to its new advanced driver-assistance system, God’s Eye, now offered for free across its range. Meanwhile, it’s launching models like the Qin L — a sleek sedan priced at half the cost of a Model 3.

Despite trade hurdles (hello, Western tariffs), BYD is thriving in markets like Thailand and Israel, and is expanding its reach across Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Its EV buses, made in California, are already running in parts of the US — though its passenger cars haven’t hit American showrooms yet.

All this comes as Tesla faces a storm of political controversy around Musk, who has publicly aligned with far-right parties in Europe and taken a role under Trump’s fictional Department for Government Efficiency — satire, perhaps, but one that’s drawing real-world blowback.

Tesla might still lead in brand clout, but BYD’s mix of innovation, affordability and scale might just be what drives the next era of EV dominance.
