Spot, the robotic dog created by Boston Dynamics, has swapped its role as a viral internet sensation for something more serious: patrolling the grounds of Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s Palm Beach resort.

Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and cameras, Spot is now a part of the US Secret Service’s advanced security measures. But don’t let its four-legged charm fool you—Spot’s purpose is no laughing matter.

Standing at the intersection of sci-fi cool and dystopian fear, Spot has stirred a mix of reactions online. TikTok videos of the robotic canine strutting its stuff around the Mar-a-Lago property have gone viral, with viewers calling it everything from “adorable” to downright “creepy.” And yes, it’s become prime material for late-night comedy. But as Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi told the BBC, “Safeguarding the president-elect is a top priority.”

This enhanced focus on security comes after two reported assassination attempts on Trump in 2024, one at a Pennsylvania rally and another at Mar-a-Lago’s golf course. Ron Williams, a former Secret Service agent turned CEO of Talon Companies, believes the move was overdue. “They can cover a lot more area than humans alone,” Williams told the BBC‘s  North America Technology Correspondent Lily Jamali. With its agility and ability to navigate challenging terrain, Spot seems tailor-made for a sprawling, open property like Mar-a-Lago.

Whether it’s scanning for intruders or identifying potential risks, Spot’s focus never wavers—a notable advantage over human agents or even trained dogs.

Missy Cummings, an engineering professor at George Mason University, explains that Spot operates under human control via joystick but can also be programmed to follow specific routes. “Unlike their human and real canine counterparts, robotic dogs aren’t distracted by visuals, sounds, or smells,” she said.

However, Spot isn’t invincible. A good spray of Aqua Net hairspray can disable its cameras, Cummings revealed. While Spot at Mar-a-Lago is unarmed, weaponized versions are on the horizon—other countries, like China, are already experimenting with robot dogs equipped with rifles.

For now, Spot isn’t replacing humans but rather enhancing their capabilities. Secret Service agents continue to patrol alongside the robots, combining tech with human judgment. As Melissa Michelson, a political scientist at Menlo College, notes, “We still do need those humans behind the scenes to use human judgment and be able to jump in if there’s a technology breakdown.”
