American students are getting a deal that will make British undergrads a little jealous. Microsoft has announced it’s handing out free one-year subscriptions to Microsoft 365 Personal for all US college students – and yes, that includes Copilot, the AI sidekick designed to make your essays, presentations and spreadsheets far less painful.
Normally priced at around £80 a year (or about £8 a month), the plan gives users access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, plus a generous 1TB of OneDrive storage. Perfect for lecture notes, dissertations, or the ten half-written novels lurking on your hard drive. After the free year, students will still be able to renew at a 50 per cent discount.

The catch? It’s only available in the US for now, and students have until 31 October to claim. Unlike the education editions of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace that universities already hand out, this deal links to a personal Microsoft account – meaning the apps and storage stick with you even after you leave campus.
Why now?
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella unveiled the offer during the White House’s AI Education Task Force meeting, where he also announced a £1 million fund in educator grants, free LinkedIn AI courses for job seekers, students and teachers, and expanded access to Microsoft’s AI tools in schools. It’s all part of Microsoft’s commitment to the Presidential AI Challenge and the AI Education Executive Order – essentially, America’s big push to prepare the next generation for an AI-driven workplace.

Why it matters
For students, Microsoft 365 Personal is already a lifesaver, and adding Copilot into the mix makes it even more appealing. Imagine having AI to summarise a 40-page journal article, restructure an essay paragraph, or make your dissertation graphs look like they weren’t thrown together in the library at 3am. It’s the closest thing to having your own academic intern on call.

The takeaway
While this particular deal is only available in the US, it signals a clear direction: tech giants are treating AI literacy as essential, not optional. If history is anything to go by, it may only be a matter of time before UK students see similar perks. For now, Brits can only watch from across the Atlantic – and keep paying full price for Microsoft 365 at home.
