Switzerland Has Just Launched A Surprising Alternative To ChatGPT

Move over ChatGPT, there’s a new brain in town – and it’s coming straight from the Swiss Alps. Switzerland has officially joined the AI race with the launch of its own national Large Language Model (LLM), designed to be a transparent alternative to Big Tech heavyweights like ChatGPT, Meta’s Llama, and China’s DeepSeek.

The model is called Apertus (Latin for “open”), and unlike its rivals, every nut, bolt, and recipe ingredient is up for public inspection. No secret sauces here. The project is a collaboration between leading Swiss universities, including EPFL and ETH Zurich, along with the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.

“We aim to provide a blueprint for how a trustworthy, sovereign and inclusive AI model can be developed,” said Martin Jaggi, professor of machine learning at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).

Why Switzerland is doing this

Since OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT in 2022, AI has evolved at breakneck speed. Companies like Anthropic, DeepSeek and Mistral are pumping out new models almost yearly. But the rush to innovate has also left chaos in its wake: bias amplification, hallucinations, and a storm of copyright lawsuits over training data.

Rather than chasing frills for everyday consumers, Apertus is pitched as a safer, more accessible system for scientific research and commerce. It was trained on 15 trillion tokens of publicly available data, with personal information stripped out and opt-out requests honoured. Unlike competitors that reveal how outputs look but not what went into them, Apertus is radically transparent. As one analyst put it, other models are like “watching a chef prepare a dish without knowing what went into the sauce.”

An open-source milestone

Apertus comes in two versions: a lighter 8 billion parameter model for individual developers and a heavyweight 70 billion parameter model for enterprise applications. Both support extended context lengths and 1,800+ languages, including Swiss German and Romansh.

Leandro von Werra, head of research at Hugging Face, told Swissinfo: “It’s not totally unique, but it’s still a trailblazer given its scale and the amount of compute used to train the model. It’s definitely a new milestone in open models.”

Who will use it?

Swiss industry groups are cautiously optimistic. The Swiss Bankers Association believes a home-grown LLM has “great long-term potential” for finance, especially given strict local data protection and secrecy laws. Swissmem, which represents the engineering sector, says it could serve companies needing to comply with EU-style regulation.

Still, adoption depends on performance. As Swissmem’s Adam Gontarz explained: “Experience shows that there is no single solution that fits all needs. Each project must take into account the specific circumstances and requirements of the business. In some cases, international solutions may also be the most effective choice.”

For now, Apertus is free to download via Hugging Face, Swisscom, and the Public AI Inference Utility. Whether it becomes Europe’s go-to AI or just another niche experiment, one thing is clear: Switzerland is serious about making AI more transparent, ethical, and open.
