Meta and Pinterest Made A Secret Donation To Molly Russell

In a quietly powerful move, social media giants Meta and Pinterest have made significant, undisclosed donations to the Molly Rose Foundation — a charity established in memory of 14-year-old Molly Russell, who tragically took her own life in 2017 after being exposed to graphic self-harm and suicide content online.

While neither Meta nor Pinterest have officially confirmed the donations, the BBC understands the funding will be spread over a number of years. Both companies have declined to comment, and the Molly Rose Foundation has said only that it “respects the wishes” of donors who want to remain anonymous.

Molly’s middle name, Rose, gives the charity its name — and its purpose. Following a coroner’s ruling that Molly’s death was “materially caused” by harmful online content, the foundation has become a leading voice in the fight for safer digital spaces for young people. Molly’s family has consistently refused any personal compensation. Instead, they’re channelling their efforts into advocacy through the foundation.

In a statement shared via their solicitor, Molly’s family explained: “We have decided that we will pursue the aims we share with Meta and Pinterest through the Molly Rose Foundation to help ensure young people have a positive experience online, instead of pursuing legal action… We, Molly’s family, have always made clear that we would never accept compensation consequent upon Molly’s death.”

The donations appear to have helped the foundation scale up significantly. Within the last nine months, it has hired a CEO, public policy experts, a communications head and a fundraising lead — signalling bigger ambitions and deeper reach.

But the foundation is no corporate puppet. It remains vocal and sharply critical of platforms like Meta. It has repeatedly called for the UK government to strengthen the Online Safety Act and for tech giants to take more responsibility for the content their algorithms serve to users — especially vulnerable teens.

Molly’s father, Ian Russell, a trustee of the foundation, remains a passionate advocate for online safety. In January, he wrote to Prime Minister Keir Starmer warning that the UK is “going backwards on online safety” and called out tech bosses like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk for shifting away from user protection in favour of profit.

“By turning the platforms backwards away from safety, Mark Zuckerberg has changed the game fundamentally and shown that the platforms aren’t really here to play safe, they’re here to make money,” he told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg.

As legal battles heat up in the US and the pressure mounts globally, Meta and Pinterest’s quiet gesture may be more than goodwill — it may be the start of something bigger.
