Channel 4’s latest documentary, Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape, has sparked outrage among survivors of AI-generated pornography, who accuse the broadcaster of insensitivity and poor judgment.

The program features the creation of an explicit deepfake video of reality star Vicky Pattison, a move survivors say undermines their fight against this harmful technology.

Survivors Speak Out

Deepfake victim Jodie, 23, whose Instagram photos were manipulated into pornographic images and shared on an incel forum, criticised Channel 4 for ignoring advice from survivor organisations. “Survivor organisations strongly advised against it when they were approached by producers,” Jodie told The Guardian. “So it’s just in really, really poor taste that they sought out advice and then ignored it completely.”

She added, “I don’t think that someone who really intricately understood the effect of this abuse on someone would do this if they actually had compassion for the survivors.”

Deepfake pornography uses artificial intelligence to superimpose a person’s face onto a nude body, often using pre-existing explicit content. Critics argue that creating and airing such material only fuels interest in the very platforms they are fighting to dismantle.

The Ethical Dilemma

One anonymous survivor expressed disbelief over the premise of the documentary. “You wouldn’t go and do a documentary where you get into a physically violent and abusive relationship to experience how it feels,” they said. “So why is it acceptable as a premise for a documentary to do this with online harm?”

Survivors fear the documentary, while intended to raise awareness, could drive traffic to harmful sites that propagate deepfake pornography.

Channel 4’s Response

In a statement to The Guardian, Channel 4 defended the documentary, saying it included testimonies from survivors of image-based abuse “to ensure that victims’ stories are at the forefront of the purpose of the programme.” However, this explanation has done little to appease campaigners.

“If the experience of anyone who’s gone through this abuse isn’t compelling enough and isn’t getting the point across how painful and how hurtful it is,” said one survivor, “then the interview is not asking the right questions.”
