Did Instagram Ruin Your Perfectly Square Feed? Here’s How You’ll Be Able to Fix It

Instagram’s recent profile redesign has caused a stir among its users, with many lamenting the disruption of their carefully curated grids. If your once-perfectly square aesthetic is now a chaotic mess of mismatched rectangles, you’re not alone. But there’s hope on the horizon, according to Instagram, as they aim to put more creative control back in your hands.

The platform’s new tall grid layout was rolled out this week, and Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri admitted in a recent post, “One of the mistakes I made was not giving people enough of a heads up.” The change was intended to optimise vertical photos and videos—currently dominating Instagram uploads—but it caught creators off guard, especially those who meticulously arrange their grids. The good news? Instagram is already working on a solution.

To make up for the grid chaos, Instagram plans to introduce new tools that allow users to fully customise their thumbnails, restoring the symmetry and harmony many users crave. “I know some of you spend a lot of time tweaking your grids and this blew all of that up,” the platform lead acknowledged. Expect new features that will give you the power to decide how your profile looks—because no one knows your aesthetic better than you.

Another exciting update in the works is a revamp of Highlights, those circular story collections that sit above your feed. Right now, they’re visually busy and tend to push your grid lower on the screen. Instagram’s solution? Integrating Highlights into the grid as a separate tab. This streamlined approach will allow you to showcase your best stories while keeping your main profile clean and clutter-free.

But perhaps the most buzzworthy feature is the upcoming grid reorder tool. You’ll soon be able to drag and drop your posts into any sequence, creating a profile that feels authentically you. Whether you want to maintain a rainbow gradient, keep your travel pics in chronological order, or simply spotlight your latest photoshoot, you’ll have the freedom to make your grid a reflection of your vision.

And as a cherry on top, Instagram is introducing the option to post directly to your grid without appearing in the feed. For those who love curating their profiles but don’t want their followers inundated with updates, this could be a game-changer.

While these updates are still in development, Instagram promises to share updates along the way. “This plan might change as we iterate over the next couple of months, but I’m hoping sharing our intentions early will help avoid any more harsh surprises,” the platform lead explained.

People need firing. Instagram WAS unique because of its square grid. It then introduced reels which were portrait allowing for both sizes to be integrated but keeping a neat and classic front grid effect.
I have spent hours curating to fit the squares and spent money to do so. I don’t ’make money’ from my accounts but how it looks is important and can give the right impression when done correctly. Some business have spent thousands curating posts to fit the square grid and it is their income.

I would wholeheartedly agree with anyone taking legal action over this change as the grids on most accounts now look like a dogs dinner. For those with mental health issues such as OCD, this is an absolute nightmare.

People need to be fired. There should at bare minimum be a choice of reverting to square where wanted. Instagram has already become a copycat version of TikTok which is lame anyway and now they are making it worse.
