6G Networks Will Require Triple the Spectrum by 2040: GSMA Report Warns of a Data Explosion

The future of connectivity looks dazzling – but a new GSMA report says there’s one colossal issue: we don’t have enough spectrum to power any of it. Unless governments act fast, the world could enter the 6G era already behind.

In its global study Vision 2040: Spectrum for the Future of Mobile Connectivity, the GSMA warns that next-gen networks will need up to three times more mid-band spectrum than countries currently have to support the tidal wave of digital demand expected by 2035–2040. That demand includes AI workloads, immersive tech, and data-heavy applications woven into everyday life.

The report urges governments to secure 2-3 GHz of mid-band spectrum per country – the minimum required to avoid a digital traffic jam in high-demand urban areas. Some markets will need even more: up to 4 GHz. Essentially, the metropolises of the 2030s will consume bandwidth like it’s oxygen.

Tall, powerful, and still not enough: next-gen towers will need triple the mid-band spectrum to fuel AI, immersive tech and your future digital life.

John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at GSMA, offers a stark warning, “This study shows that the 6G era will require three times more mid-band spectrum than is available today… Satisfying these spectrum requirements will support robust and sustainable connectivity, deliver digital ambitions and help economies grow.”

The GSMA stresses the urgency: governments need to prepare now, not in 2030 when 6G first rolls out. With WRC-27 approaching, nations are about to negotiate the future spectrum bands that will determine whether 6G thrives or sputters. Delay these decisions and expect slower speeds, rising congestion, and weakened digital competitiveness.

5G is cute – but 6G wants three times the spectrum space.

GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath emphasises the stakes, “6G will not arrive through a single breakthrough… New concepts such as embedding AI or augmented reality into our everyday lives will depend on sustainable and harmonised spectrum solutions… The spectrum choices we make together in the coming years will determine how effectively 6G delivers value.”

The study predicts over 5 billion 6G connections by 2040, with billions more still relying on 4G and 5G. It’s a crowded digital household – and without fresh mid-band spectrum, it’s going to feel like rush hour every hour.

For consumers, the takeaway is clear: the 6G future needs not just innovation, but space. And the decisions made in the next 24 months will shape the next 20 years of global connectivity.
