We’ve all been there – nodding earnestly through a medical consultation, only to leave wondering what did they actually say?
Mirror is a new AI-powered “medical memory” app from UK health-tech company Aide Health, designed to make those forgetful moments obsolete.
Unlike note-taking tools for doctors, Mirror exists purely for the patient. It discreetly listens during any consultation – GP, pharmacy, optician, hospital – then produces a clear, plain-English summary you can revisit, share, or even query later. And of course Mirror never zones out when the doctor starts talking about hypertension versus hypotension.

Doctors still listen to your heartbeat; now AI listens too – but only to help you remember what was said.
According to research, up to 80% of medical information is forgotten immediately, and half of what’s remembered is wrong. Those communication gaps cause 70% of clinical errors, costing the NHS an estimated £1 billion a year.
“Imagine leaving any appointment with a clear, personalised summary that makes you feel more in control of your health,” says Ian Wharton, Founder and CEO of Aide Health. “That’s why we designed Mirror.”

The Human Problem Behind the Tech
Mirror was inspired by Wharton’s own family experience. When his father – who has early-stage Alzheimer’s – was hospitalised after a fall, the sheer overload of information was overwhelming.
“The volume and complexity of medical information given to him at the bedside, only days after trauma while in an unfamiliar environment, meant little, if anything, was remembered,” Wharton says. “We were with him nearly the entire time, but my biggest fear was something crucial being missed in the moments he was alone.”

Mirror’s AI summary turns complex doctor’s notes into clear, shareable language you can actually understand.
It’s a universal problem. Stress, anxiety, jargon and information overload all narrow the brain’s focus, meaning most patients fixate on the “big news” (“you have X condition”) while missing crucial details about medication, follow-up, or treatment options. Vulnerable groups – including the elderly and those with lower health literacy – are hit hardest.
Mirror flips that script by translating medical language into clarity. Once an appointment ends, users receive a written summary highlighting their concerns, diagnosis and next steps. They can ask Mirror follow-up questions (“What did the doctor say about my medication?”) or share the summary with relatives or caregivers – ensuring nothing vital gets lost in translation.

Early user Janette Palfrey described the experience as “brilliant,” saying, “I could just focus on talking with my consultant without stressing about missing anything, because I knew the app was recording it all. Afterwards, I got a really clear summary with headings like my concerns, diagnosis and prognosis. If there was a medical term I didn’t get, I could just ask Mirror and it explained it – that was such a relief.”
She added, “It honestly felt like having support in my pocket… Even my brother who is 92 and lives in Dublin has already said he wants to use it too.”
Mirror aims to help patients feel calmer, more informed, and better able to manage their care. Studies show improving self-management significantly reduces healthcare utilisation across both primary and secondary care – a win for patients and the NHS.

For those of you worried about data-hungry AI platforms, Mirror’s says its recordings are deleted as soon as they’re summarised – no audio is stored. Patient data is encrypted, as Aide Health’s systems are independently assessed to meet cybersecurity standards.
Mirror is designed for patient-led consent and ownership, not hidden behind hospital portals or electronic health records. It’s tech that puts control back where it belongs – in the patient’s hands. Despite this users are reminded that AI can make mistakes, and that medical guidance should always be confirmed with a clinician.

Mirror discreetly records your consultation
Headquartered in London, Aide Health has served the NHS for over three years and is funded by Innovate UK and the National Institute for Health and Care Research. It was recently selected for Google for Startups: AI for Health, and its core product, Aide, is already registered as a Class I UK Medical Device.
